At long last this winter is coming to an end. Now we can begin to get back to enjoying all the outdoor activities Chester County provides for us. Unfortunately, returning with the warm weather will be Mother Nature's parasites: fleas and ticks. At Eagle Animal Hospital we always strive to give our clients and their pets the best in all aspects of veterinary medicine. With this in mind, we are excited to introduce the newest, safest and most effective product in our arsenal of flea and tick protection: Parastar Plus.
Parastar Plus is a topical flea and tick preventative for use in dogs. Like many of the topical flea and tick preventatives available. Parastar Plus is applied directly to the skin between your dog’s shoulder blades. Through the static and motion of your dog’s hair, Parastar quickly spreads over his/her entire body, protecting them from nose to tail. Parastar Plus is effective at killing the Deer Tick, Brown Dog Tick, American Dog Tick, Lone Star Tick, and fleas. It also kills chewing lice, and can aid in the control of Sarcoptic Mites that can cause mange.
When choosing a topical flea and tick preventative for your dog, two things are vital: safety and efficacy. Clinical trials have shown Parastar Plus to be extremely safe for use on dogs. The active ingredient in Parastar Plus is fipronil. Fipronil has been on the market for years and is found in products such as Frontline and Fiprogard. Fipronil has been proven safe for use on dogs with very limited side effects. However, with fipronil’s safety comes a decrease in efficacy. Fipronil is effective at killing fleas and ticks, but it can take up to 48-72 hours for the parasites to die. This, unfortunately, opens the door for disease transmission to our dogs, as well as flea infestations to arise in our houses. In order to increase the speed at which topical flea and tick medication kill parasites, many have added permethrins to their products. Permethrins are very effective at killing fleas and ticks quickly; however, with this increased speed comes the increased risk of negative reactions. Many of the products that effectively kill fleas and ticks quickly have up to 50% permethrin in their make up. Parastar Plus has combined fipronil with a permethrin called cyphenothrin. These two medications work together to start killing fleas and ticks within 1- 4 hours, the fastest of any product on the market. The way in which fipronil combines with cyphenothrin has allowed Parastar Plus to need only small amounts of this permethrin, about 5%. This need for only a small amount of permethrin vastly reduces any potential for negative side effects. Parastar Plus is supplied as individual tubes to apply to the skin. Only a small amount of liquid material is needed to cover your entire dog’s coat, thus making application easier. Parastar Plus requires just once monthly application and has been shown to be effective for the entire 30 days at controlling fleas and ticks.
So get out there and enjoy all that Chester County has to offer this spring and summer without the worry of fleas and ticks. Ask our staff about getting your dog covered with Parastar Plus. Also, don’t forget about using Sentinel once monthly so you don’t have to worry about mosquito, heartworm disease and intestinal parasites.
