Yum! Yum! Eat 'em up!

Is it really hard to believe some of the things that pets succeed at ingesting. Often the ingestion foreign object has to be surgically removed due to blockage of the stomach and/or intestines. The following is a surprising list of objects removed from pet's intestinal tracts as reported by Veterinary Pet Insurance Company in one year.

  • chopsticks
  • cinnamon scented pinecone
  • fish hook and line004_1.JPG
  • two plastic eyeballs
  • tent stake
  • lobster shell
  • sweatshirt
  • rosebush
  • five pounds of trash and a scrub brush
  • aluminum can
  • hemorrhoid suppositories
  • deer antlers
  • wedding ring
  • golf ball skin
  • jellyfish
  • G. I. Joe action figure
  • 15 vanilla votive candles
  • diaper
  • artificial finger nails
  • Cholla cactus
  • foot long metal hanger
  • makeup sponge
  • package of fluorescent bulbs
  • mothballs
  • a corner of a bed

My personal favorite of all is a dead porcupine! All I want to know is what that dog could have been thinking? "Waitress. I would like to start with this small brown mammal and then when my stomach is full I will clean my teeth with one of these sharp pointy things?"

Most importantly, if your pet has acutely ventured off of their normal appetite they may have ingested such a foreign object. Be alert for symptoms. Any vomiting, (especially immediately after eating or drinking) lethargy, diarrhea or a lack of interest in eating his regular diet may indicate they have "hoovered" up something that they shouldn't have. Please, call Eagle Animal Hospital at (610) 458-8789 immediately. We will accommodate any medical emergency that you may have. We serve Chester Springs, Exton, Downingtown, Glenmoore, and the surrounding areas.
